Limestone: The many uses of Limestone Rock

Limestone, including crushed limestone, or limestone gravel, has become an extremely popular quarried stone to use for outdoor projects such as driveway landscaping, land drainage and much more. Available in many different forms of gravel, shingle and stone, limestone is well known for its high quality, durability and classic look.

Limestone is truly versatile and fits nicely into both the building aggregates and decorative aggregates categories due to its functionality and ability to look good at the same time. So whether it's a driveway, dry stone wall or drainage you have to tackle, it's well worth considering the benefits of using limestone rock. Read ahead for more information or visit our section of crushed limestone products.

Limestone Uses

There is a surprisingly long list of processes that limestone is involved in. From purifying molten glass and sugar, to acting as a filler in toothpaste and neutraliser to acidic soils, limestone is an extrememly handy rock to have around. For the purposes of this article, we're going to focus on its many uses as a hardscaping element.

At Smiths Bletchington we recommend using limestone for many different types of outdoor projects. A few of our favourites are:

  • Driveways: A limestone driveway is not only easy to put together, but also functional and good looking. It's a great solution for anyone used to getting their wheels covered in mud on rainy days. We'd suggest using crushed limestone between 10mm and 20mm for your driveway.
  • Dry Stone Walls & Retaining Walls: Dry stone walls and other limestone walls are an attractive outdoor feature, particularly if you live in the countryside. We recommend our Cotswold Limestone for walling. View our article on how to make a dry stone wall for more information.
  • Land Drainage: Crushed limestone is a great material for land drainage purposes. There are many ways you can go about putting a drainage system in place, whether it's general land drainage or setting up proper drainage for arenas and pitches. We recommend our 75mm Crushed Limestone and 10mm to 20mm Carboniferous Limestone, depending on the project.
  • Ground Stabilisation: Limestone is particularly useful for ground stabilisation projects. Whether you use gabion baskets or reno mattresses, crushed limestone is the best rock for the job.

Good luck with your outdoor projects! Remember to contact us if you have any questions about limestone and its many functions.
